Guide 2: Battle of the Brands

Talking Dog, the University of Georgia’s student-led advertising agency, will showcase their advertising campaigns to the public at Battle of the Brands on April 4, 2017 at 6:00 p.m. Presentations will take place in Grady, 120 Hooper St., in Studio 100 on the first floor of the building.

Talking Dog selects 50 of the top students out of over 100 applicants each year for a chance to enhance their communications skills and gain real-world experience while still in school. Each seven-member team works with a unique client, all of whom run local Athens businesses. This year’s clients include Athens Bagel Company, Community, Dynamite Clothing, Georgia Theatre Rooftop, Hendershots, Southern Brewing Company and UGA Miracle.

Battle of the Brands will be the final meeting of the year for UGA AdClub, of which Talking Dog is an affiliate group, and will be open to club members, Grady faculty and staff, and the public at large. Admission is free, and they gladly welcome people in the Athens community to come see what Talking Dog has been working on all year.

Talking Dog strives to provide students with internship-caliber experience working with fellow peers, and g2a is proud to support this student-run agency and the businesses they represent. For more information about Talking Dog, please visit ugatalkingdog.org.

Guide 2: Where we are Headed

Spring break is so close, we here at g2a can almost taste it. And with spring break just around the corner, everyone is busy getting ready for a much anticipated vacation. We’ve got some pretty exciting plans for next week, and thought we would share a little preview of where we are headed. Whether you are doing something exciting, or enjoying Athens for a low key staycation, we hope this gets you excited for your spring break too!

Karson Bankhead

Screen Shot 2017-03-01 at 1.28.17 PMKarson will be road tripping down to sunny Key West, Florida for five days. Karson says, “I am looking forward to warm weather and hanging out with friends. We have a catamaran trip planned, but besides that, we will just be hanging out by the pool and on the beach for most of the week.” Another thing Karson is looking forward to is dinner at “Sloppy Joes,” which is a Key West staple.

Lindsay Tuck and Eliza Edlich

Lindsay and I will be traveling to the Dominican Republic for our senior spring break. We’ve been planning this trip all year, and the anticipation has definitely been building. We are going with a huge group of friends and fellow seniors. Even though it ‘s shaping up to be a lively getaway, we are looking forward to spending some time laying out in the sun. Lindsay says, “Although I never like leaving Athens, I’m excited for one last hoorah with our friends before graduation.”

Peyton Haecker

Screen Shot 2017-03-01 at 1.48.00 PMPeyton’s spring break encompasses both sand and snow. For the first part of the week, she will be traveling to Hilton Head with some girlfriends, then heading home to Denver, Colorado. She says, “After having my body in the horizontal position, **pleasure** reading, and great food with gorgeous views, I am going to hit the slopes with some dawg friends and explore the other side of spring breaking in Vail. Can’t say that I have too much to complain about when I’m getting the best of both worlds.” At the sound of all that, I couldn’t agree more!

Hanna Friedlander

Hanna is heading to sunny Amelia Island where she is looking forward to sailing and celebrating her 21st birthday. Hanna is ready to forget about school for a week and eat as much fresh seafood as possible. If you run into Hanna this week on Amelia Island, wish her a big Happy Birthday!

Katy Wildes

g2a’s social media extraordinair, Katy, will be headed to Paris, France next week, where she will take in the sights, lights, and amazing food on a much deserved vacation.  There will definitely be insta-worthy moments along the way (like this one from her last trip), so here’s to hoping we get to see some awesome pictures once she’s back.

Cheri Leavy

Cheri will be traveling to Charleston, SC next week. Although she is going for work, we are hoping she treats herself to a little rest and relaxation while on her visit. With all of the beauty and fun activities Charleston has to offer, it shouldn’t be too hard to find something to occupy her time in between meetings!

Guide 2: Saturday in Athens

Athens may be known for a few things – great music, college football, awesome food – the list goes on. But among all of these, one that stands out in my mind is Saturdays in Athens. Athens knows how to do Saturdays. Whether it’s game season, or just a regular ole weekend, this town is full of stuff to do. The list below consists of some activities that would definitely contribute to a great weekend. Check them out!

Wake up, brunch. There are a ton of places for you to get an awesome meal that will sure to be a great start to the day. One of my favorites is home.made. You can’t go wrong with the Mayberry (a buttermilk biscuit with pimento cheese, fried chicken, spicy pepper jelly, bacon, lettuce and remoulade), and a Bloody Mary on the side.

Saturday is a great day for shopping. So after brunch head on over to Five Points, where there is a store for everyone. Make sure to stop by IV Seasons, Grinning Mule, Appointments at Five, and BMA at Home.

If this awesome weather persists, you’ll definitely want to do something outside. If you’re trying to work on your golf game, the UGA golf course would be a great stop. If you’d rather sit and sip, the rooftop bar at the Georgia Theatre should be your go to place.

After you work up an appetite during your time in the sun, check out the plethora of dinner options downtown. One of my favorites has to be The World Famous. They recently switched up there menu, which means this would be a perfect time to check it out.

If you’re looking for an after dinner activity, The Rook and Pawn is my go to place for a great, low key hangout. With hundreds of games to choose from, you definitely won’t be bored, making it the perfect way to end an eventful day!

Guide 2: Dining in Athens

We all know that Athens is a foodie hub with restaurants and eateries on what seems like every corner. Over the years I have found that many of my favorite Athens restaurants are concentrated in Downtown or Five Points. When thinking about where to have my next meal, it is easy to fall into the trap of solely focusing on those two areas. But Athens is home to so many places outside of these neighborhoods that should definitely not be missed. While we like to feature these spots a good bit (they’re so delicious, how could we not?), we thought it would be nice to create a comprehensive list of restaurants outside of Downtown and Five Points, for your eating pleasure. In no particular order…

  1. Big City Bread
Located just outside downtown, Big City Bread is a go to for breakfast, lunch and dinner

Guide 2: The ARTini’s Experience

Looking for a place in Athens where you can paint, drink, and socialize? Well look no further, because ARTini’s Art Lounge located downtown is your one stop shop for all three. Painting at ARTini’s is an activity I’ve wanted to do since coming to Athens, and after recently getting to try it, I’m happy to report it exceeded even my long hyped expectations.

Every night of the week ARTini’s has a set piece of art for customers to paint. When I went, we created these lovely horses (my painting now sits proudly in my bedroom).

Screen Shot 2017-02-01 at 6.54.23 PM

A calendar of their scheduled paintings can be found here.

To be totally honest, I was a bit nervous at first due to my lack of artistic ability. But luckily the canvases come with an outline of whatever you will be painting. This is one thing I really loved about my ARTini’s experience – whether you consider yourself a modern day Picasso, or just an amateur, the pre-made canvases and helpful instructor will guide you every step of the way if needed.

ARTini’s is a perfect activity for a random Wednesday night or special occasion. When we went, there was a fun group there celebrating a birthday, and the crowd was loving it. An added bonus is the wine and beer available for purchase.

In my mind, the trifecta of creativity, libations, and good company is what makes ARTini’s a hit, and I can’t wait to visit again. Whether you and a couple of friends want something fun to do, you’re looking to host an event for a large group of people, or you just want to flex your artistic muscles, definitely check out ARTini’s!

Stop Getting Sick, Quick!

Stop getting sick, quick! In college, a simple case of the flu or stomach bug can run rampant. Whether you live in a dorm or with roommates off campus, close quarters are not your immune system’s friend. College students also seem to be prone to hurting themselves. One of the hardest things I found after coming to UGA was that when I got sick or injured, I had no mom or regular doctor to nurse me back to health. Luckily after four years and lots of recommendations, I have somewhat figured out how to navigate the medical waters of Athens, Ga. So whether you are regretting not getting that flu shot, or finally checking out that crick in your neck, here is a list of g2a’s recommendations.

For your general medical needs…Regional FirstCare

Screen Shot 2017-01-25 at 3.53.41 PM

With four area locations, Regional FirstCare’s clinics are your go to stop for comprehensive non-emergency care. The best part about it? There is no appointment necessary, so walk-ins are welcome.

For your drug store needs…Hodgson’s Pharmacy

Screen Shot 2017-01-25 at 3.45.02 PM

Since 1956 Hodgson’s Pharmacy in Five Points has been providing Athens with prescription medicine, over-the-counter remedies, and health and beauty products to meet all of your needs. A HUGE added bonus is the soda fountain, which offers ice cream in-store for just $1!

For your Orthodontic/Dental needs…Classic City Orthodontics and Oral Surgery Associates & Dental Implant Centers

Dr. Tradd Harter at Classic City Orthodontics uses sophisticated technology and a specialized custom treatment planning system to ensure that you leave gleaming with a perfect smile. In addition, Oral Surgery Associates and Dental Implant Systems performs an array of oral surgeries to meet your procedural needs. These include removing wisdom teeth, dental extractions, and the diagnosis and treatment of oral diseases. You can’t go wrong with these two.

For your chiropractic needs…Chiropractic Works

Dr. Ken Cook at Chiropractic Works is the health and wellness specialist you need in your life. As an expert in his field, Dr. Cook’s practice provides non-surgical treatments as well as neuro-feedback therapy through his BrainCore clinic, which addresses a variety of ailments and discomforts.

Luckily, Athens’ finest has the hook up on what you should definitely be sporting in this sweater weather.
