Guide2: Best Spots to Dine Outside this Spring

Although this Winter has been a particularly warm one, there is no better feeling than Springtime in Athens. The Classic City starts to hustle and bustle, as people start spending their afternoons and evenings walking around to enjoy the weather.

We’ve rounded up the best places to go sit and enjoy springtime in Athens while getting a delicious bite to eat.

Big City Bread Cafe

big-city-brad

Big City’s huge outdoor patio is the #1 spot to rest and dine in the afternoon or evening. The plus side about going once the sun goes down? The twinkly lights above that makes the atmosphere even more enjoyable than it already is! So romantic and vibe-y.

Marti’s at Midday

marti-s-at-miday-exterior_4adeda29-5056-a36a-0ab90310f97a0ecb

Marti’s at Midday is the perfect lunch spot in Athens. Located in Normaltown, Marti’s sunroom and patio will make your chicken salad and pita chips taste even more enjoyable (which is hard to do, its so good).  Don’t let the brightness of the afternoon sun scare you away, there is plenty of bright and colorful umbrellas to keep you cool!

Seabear Oyster Bar

5-2-1

Seabear Oyster Bar has quickly become a favorite of my friend group’s. Every week, we can’t wait to snag a table on the outside patio. Dining al fresco at Seabear with a spread full of delicious food and wine is the perfect combo.

Marker 7 Coastal Grill

Something unique about Marker 7 is that it was built in an old Athens party house, which was restored by owner Chris Lloyd and later awarded by the Historic Preservation Society. When you sit on the porch outside, you feel like your at home enjoying a meal with all your friends and family. The porch looks out over Five Points and is a wonderful place to dine any night of the week.

Guide2: Comfort food during March Madness

March Madness is here. Being from North Carolina, basketball and March Madness is a huge deal for me. Don’t get me wrong, I am no college basketball expert. However, picking teams and making brackets is always a fun way to have friendly competition with friends and family. Making brackets can also be extremely stressful. After all, it is called “madness”. You never know when the team you are counting on is going to let you down. I would know, I am a Tarheel basketball fan.

All that being said, there is something you can turn to when your brackets and team are letting you down…Comfort food. And lucky for you, the Classic City has no shortage of it. So I’m rounding up the best places in town to get food that is good for the soul and can mend your broken basketball hearts.

1. The Place

The Place, Athens very own restaurant dedicated to serving the best southern comfort food. From shrimp n’ grits to mac and cheese, The Place has you covered on all your favorite foods that will leave you full and smiling, even after a tough loss.

Mama’s Boy

Breakfast food in general is great comfort food, and Mama’s Boy makes the best. Their biscuits can solve any problem you may have, especially with a piece of fried chicken in between. You also cannot go wrong with their fried green tomatoes or their delicious biscuits and gravy.

South Kitchen and Bar

If you want the ultimate comfort combo, go for the Build Your Own Veggie plate at South Kitchen and Bar. Don’t let the word “veggie” fool you, the options include duck fat tater tots, fried pickled okra, truffled mac and cheese, home-styled collard greens, and more.

Screen Shot 2017-03-15 at 11.23.51 PM

Grindhouse Killer Burgers

Burger and fries is a classic comfort combo. At Grindhouse Burgers, you can build your own or try one of theirs. Some of my favorites? Their Cowboy Burger with cheddar, applewood bacon, crispy vidalia onion rings, and bbq sauce and their Dixie burger with pimento cheese, fried green tomatos, carolina cole slaw, and chipotle ranch, which you can enjoy with sweet potato fries or crinkle cut fries (we say get both, you deserve it).

Guide2: Building a Perfect Athens Bagel

Athens Bagel Company is a staple in the Athens community, serving students and locals fresh, delicious bagels for breakfast and lunch.

ABC’s menu contains favorite lunch sandwiches, such as The Alphabet City, a twist on a classic BLT with their special southwestern cream cheese, and The Mulberry Street, a PIZZA BAGEL (um, yum). However, you can create your perfect lunch bagel with the endless amount of toppings and spreads available.

Step 1: Toasted or Fresh?

unspecified-3Want to know a secret? ABC’s bagels are made New York style! They’re so fresh that they don’t even need toasting. Trust us on this!

Step 2: Build It Up

unspecified-4Now it is time to choose your meats and cheeses. You can choose from turkey, ham, bacon, sausage, pastrami, and even lox. My personal lunch time favorite? Turkey, cheddar, and wait for it…a runny egg. This combination never gets old, trust me I have been eating it the entire four years I’ve been in Athens!

Step 3: Spread it On

unspecified-8The thing that sets ABC’s lunch sandwiches apart are the spreads. When you add cream cheese to your lunch sandwich it gives it a creamy bite, that quite frankly is making my mouth water as I think about it! I add the veggie cream cheese to mine for a little crunch. Other favorite spreads include bacon-chive, herb, and roasted red pepper. If cream cheese is not your thing, ABC also offers hummus. Craving dessert for lunch? Skip the meats and cheeses and go for the Nutella.

Step 4: Add Some Veggies

unspecified-9You can never eat too many veggies. Not only does ABC offer lettuce, tomato, and onion, but also grilled mushrooms, onions, and AVOCADO! It is a game changer. I know this, because I don’t order a bagel without it!

unspecified-5We hope ABC can spread some bagel love to you as they have to us!

Guide2: Galentine’s Day

First off, Happy Valentine’s Day from the Guide2Athens Team! Spreading love your way. Second, i’d like to acknowledge that although Valentine’s Day is dedicated to love, that love should not just be dedicated to your significant other. Every romantic relationship started as a friendship, therefore it’s necessary to celebrate all the wonderful friendships in your life.

This brings me to Galentine’s Day. What is Galentine’s Day? Galentine’s Day is a term coined by Amy Poehler’s TV character in the show “Parks and Recreation,” and has gone from a fictional day to a tradition among many groups of women. So, whether you are single or in a relationship, but plan on spending much needed time with your “Gals” tonight, we have created the perfect itinerary for you.

Fulfill that inevitable sweet tooth at Condor Chocolates (trust us, its much better than chocolates from a heart shaped box)

Guide2: UGA Talking Dog

If you live in Athens, then you know that the heart and soul of The Classic City is our local businesses. Do you also know there is a student-run, full service advertising agency committed to serving our local businesses?

16299476_1239943182755212_2662762663037939589_nTalking Dog Advertising is compromised of creative and talented students from The University of Georgia, who have dedicated their time to local clients, in order to make sure those businesses get the attention they deserve.

The president of Talking Dog, Caroline Youngs, a senior graduating from Grady this spring, explains TD best:

“Talking Dog is an amazing opportunity for students to gain real agency experience, and I have had the privilege of facilitating and ensuring that the experience is positive for everyone involved. As internships become increasingly competitive to obtain, the concept of providing qualified students with the opportunity to gain real advertising agency experience as well as build their resumes/portfolios is a game changer- especially for those seeking employment after graduation within the field. Not only does the agency open doors for extremely bright and qualified students, but it also creates an opportunity for them to serve local clients and provide them with effective advertising campaigns for free. The community service aspect of the agency is what make me the most proud to be associated with it- as past teams have significantly increased sales and consumer bases for their clients through this volunteer work. Talking Dog is an amazing organization to be a part of, and I hope that the amazing growth that we have seen in our membership as well as client roster will continue for years to come. It’s a huge asset for everyone involved- and it has been a concept that I am truly proud to represent. “

This year the students of Talking Dog have done some amazing work. Their impressive list of clients include Athens Bagel Company, Hendershots, Dynamite, Community, The Georgia Theater Rooftop, UGA Miracle, and Southern Brewing Company. Be sure to check out Instagram to see what these students have been working hard do. You will not be disappointed!

Guide2: The Pearl Girls

The Pearl Girls is more than just your average jewelry store. India Rows saw a need for a place where Southern women could buy high quality pearl jewelry. However, she wanted to also provide them with a place that knew the exact value of what they are selling and its history. India has a “pearl diploma,” for real! She studied at the Gemological Institute, therefore you know what you get at The Pearl Girls is nothing but the best.

Not only do Pearl Girls supply the best pearls, but they are specific about the pearl suppliers that they work with. Knowing the condition of the pearls, the working conditions at the pearl farm, and the environmental impact of the farm is a must.

In addition to her passion for pearls, India is also passionate about women and her community. After she had children, she thought to herself that The Pearl Girls could be a great job for women of all stages of life. This does not just pertain to young mothers, but older women with energy, passion, and creativity. In addition to providing jobs for women in the community, India gives back to organizations and groups that specifically benefit women, such as raising money for breast cancer research and donating money to youth girl’s sports programs.

So, whether you are shopping for a new piece to add to your jewelry collection or want to modernize a sentimental piece of jewelry, The Pearl Girls is the place for you!
